Traveling Light

“These were his instructions: “Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. Wear sandals but not an extra shirt.”

Mark 6:8-9

As we approach our move, we have a lot to consider. Do we ship our things in a container? What do we keep? What do we leave? Do we rent our house furnished or unfurnished? When I walk through my house now, all I see is just how much stuff we have and I wonder what we will do with it all.

Over the years we’ve been challenged again and again by thinkers such as Richard Foster and John Mark Comer to follow Jesus in the practice of Simplicity, but we’re pushing against a massive cultural wave of consumerism and materialism so it’s easier said than done. I’m not one to shop much so I’ve always considered myself quite a reasonable minimalist, but it wasn’t until I was faced with the idea of having to part with all my belongings that I realised that my ‘minimalism’ is a far cry from the lifestyle that Jesus demonstrated to us. “Where your treasure is, your heart will be also”, right? I’ve been surprised by some of the things I’m finding hard to let go of… not least our books.

Anyways, both Andrew and I have had a growing sense that we should take the bare minimum. We may ship some personal items, books, and picture frames, but all else must go.

This is in line with a dream I had a few months ago that beckoned us to “travel light” so that we could be flexible to go where the Spirit leads… In light of this massive down-sizing, please follow our Instagram page or my Facebook marketplace page to see what we are selling (in case there’s something you want to clutter your own home with!) and watch out for our Farewell Party/Garage Sale!

Prayer points:

*May our hearts lie in heavenly treasures, “where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.” (Matt 6:20)

*May we follow Jesus’ example of living a simple life and may we be free of consumerism.

*May we trust in God’s provision for our needs.
